The facts

  • Heart Failure affects more than 64 million people worldwide and the prevalence is rising
  • Heart Failure is currently estimated to affect 300,000 Australians, with over 30,000 new diagnoses made every year
  • There are over 60,000 hospitalisations in Australia each year for Heart Failure
  • Nearly 1 in 50 Australians die of Heart Failure
  • Only 144 heart donations are made each year in Australia (2020).

Patients with heart failure have few treatment options. Tragically, many advanced heart failure patients die while waiting for a suitable heart, and the need is growing.

The Artificial Heart Frontiers Program seeks to address the need with new and improved treatment options.

Current fate of patients

50-75% of Heart Failure patients die within five years.
